The Tour de France comes to the Penistone Area

The world's greatest cycle race comes to Yorkshire in July 2014 and passes through Langsett on Sunday July 6th, just over 4 miles from the centre of Penistone. The nearest train station to Langsett is Penistone and the area is bound to be a hub of excitement and activity on the weekend of the event.

Special events are planned leading up to the weekend, including a cultural festival which runs from 27th March - 6th July. Details will appear here as soon.

This is your chance to witness and be part of a historical sporting event - over 3 billion people watch the event on tv - and explore a region that has much to offer.

Info from BMBC site:

"Although there are very few roads affected, the race route, Mortimer Road, Gilbert Hill and Windle Edge will all be closed from midnight on Saturday, 5 July.

"Public Transport: The Penistone Line service will be increased from the normal two hourly to a train every 45 minutes. Spectators planning on taking their bike on the train should check with the service provider beforehand as capacity for bicycles in limited.

"Bus services between Barnsley and Penistone will operate as normal but services will not continue beyond Penistone to Holmfirth, Dunford Bridge, Millhouse Green, Flouch or Crow Edge."

***There is no Park & Ride service in operation.***

Since buses will not run beyond Penistone, the only way to get to the race will be to walk from the town along the main Manchester Road or the along Trans Pennine Trail and then the road. Directions are signposted.

The first stage starts in Leeds and finishes in Harrogate; stage 2 starts in York and finishes in Sheffield - it's this stage that passes through Langsett.

Tourism information

A special tourism centre has been opened in the centre of Penistone specially for the event. Set up by East Peaks Innovation Partnership, it carries a wide range of leaflets and helpful staff are on hand to advise.

The centre is run by volunteers and is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, 4 hours each day. It can be found on Shrewsbury Road just before the cinema (on the main road leading from the train station to the centre of town).
