The Route
Crossing 3 counties (West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and Derbyshire), the Cal-Der-Went walk links the rivers Calder with the Derwent and was devised by Geoffrey Carr in the 1970s.
At just under 30 miles the full walk isn't for the faint-hearted, however it's often broken down into sections (eg Yorkshire Sculpture Park to Cawthorne) by those wanting a shorter route.
Starting at Horbury near Wakefiled the walk soon becomes increasingly rural and finishes at the Derwent Reservoir where you'll find the Upper Derwent Visitor Centre (see link opposite).
En route you'll pass through or near the Yorkshire Scultpure Park, Cannon Hall, Cawthorne, Penistone and Langsett and onto the Derwent - so there's a wide of variety of sights to take in.
As mentioned above, the Cal-Der-Went was planned by Geoffrey Carr and anyone wishing to follow the full route is advised to buy the illustrated official guide, "The Cal-Der-Went Walk" by Geoffrey Carr. (Most of the information about the walk on this site was adapted from this book.)
It can be obtained from sellers such as Amazon, Waterstones and John Merrill Walk Guides amongst others.
