Why Penny the Sheep?

Penny the Sheep

Penny the Penistone sheep has been chosen to represent locally produced goods.

Penistone sheep are a hardy breed, with white faces and legs, and even the ewes have horns. The rams’ horns spiral outwards in a decorative manner.

This breed of sheep has been traded locally since 1699, and the remnants of woollen mills and weavers’ cottages can still be found locally.

Traditionally the wool was used to make a length of cloth called a ‘Penistone’. The original cloth market where this type of product was traded is now the large chemist’s shop in the middle of the town.

Also known as the Whitefaced Woodland, the Penistone is now classified as a "vulnerable" breed by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust.
