Leeds is only 40 minutes away by car and so a visit to the City and its museums is quite a feasible day out.
"One of the premier venues for the visual arts in the north. Its nationally designated collection ranges from the 19th century to contemporary art.
Founded in 1888, Leeds City Art Gallery was built by funds raised in a public subscription as part of celebrations for Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee in 1887. It was modernised and extended in the early 1980s. It is currently undergoing further changes, including the refurbishment of the Victorian tiled hall which connects the Gallery to the Central Library.
An outstanding collection of English watercolours; fine Victorian academic and Pre-Raphaelite painting; late 19th century French pictures and "probably the best collection of 20th century British art outside London" (The Times) Extensive collection of modern sculpture." - taken from the www.24hourmuseum.org.uk website.
